How good is your English? To answer this question, people around the world use a common scale called the CEFR. The letters mean Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. It was created in Europe, but today schools, universities, exams and companies in many countries use it. It describes what a person can do with a language, not only what they know.
The scale has six levels. A1 and A2 are for basic users. B1 and B2 are for independent users. C1 and C2 are for proficient users, which means people who use the language very well. Each level has a clear description. For example, at A1 you can introduce yourself, ask and answer simple questions, and understand very common words and sentences. At B1 you can talk about your experiences and your plans, and you can understand the main points of clear speech. At C2 you understand almost everything and express yourself easily, like an educated native speaker.
Why is this useful for you? First, it gives you a clear map. You know where you are and where you are going. Second, it makes progress visible. Many learners feel that nothing changes, but when you complete a level, you can see the change. Third, it helps you to choose the right material. A story written for B2 may be too difficult for an A1 learner, and a book for A1 may be too easy for a B1 learner.
Our course starts at A1, the first step. At this level you do not need a lot of grammar or a big vocabulary. You need the most common words, simple sentences and a lot of listening. Finish A1 slowly and well, because every later level stands on it.
Do not be in a hurry. Most learners need many weeks of regular study to move from one level to the next, and the time depends on how often you practise.
Know your level, take one step at a time, and finish A1 well.
