Look at the sentence "How are you?" Do you see three separate words, or one phrase? A native speaker does not build this sentence word by word. It comes out as one piece, quickly and without thinking. Language teacher Michael Lewis called these pieces chunks, and he argued that a big part of fluent speech is made from them.
Chunks are everywhere. "Nice to meet you." "What time is it?" "I would like a coffee, please." "Can I help you?" "See you tomorrow." We learn them together, we remember them together, and we use them together. When you know a chunk, you do not need to think about grammar every time. The grammar is already inside the chunk, and it is correct.
Why does this help a beginner? First, speed. If you must choose every word and every verb form, you speak slowly and you get tired. With chunks, you use the time to think about the meaning. Second, accuracy. A learner who says "I would like a coffee" copies a perfect sentence, so there is no mistake. Third, naturalness. People who learn only single words often sound strange, because they miss the usual combinations.
How can you learn chunks? When you meet a new word, write it with its neighbours. Do not write only "coffee". Write "a cup of coffee" and "I would like a coffee". Learn full questions, not single question words. Listen to dialogues and notice the phrases that return again and again. Then change the last part: "I would like a coffee" becomes "I would like a ticket", "I would like some water", "I would like to pay".
This small trick gives you many sentences from one pattern. Learn ten useful chunks this week, and you will be surprised how much you can already say.
