How do you remember a new word like "knife"? You can repeat it twenty times, or you can imagine a very big knife cutting a tiny silent "k" in half. The second way is silly, but it works better. This is a mnemonic, a trick that helps your memory by connecting new information to something vivid and easy to remember.
People have used mnemonics for more than two thousand years. In ancient Greece and Rome, speakers used the "memory palace" to remember long speeches. They imagined walking through a familiar house and placing each idea in a different room. When they needed the idea, they simply walked through the house again in their minds.
Why do mnemonics work? The brain remembers pictures, stories, emotions and strange things much better than plain facts. A boring word list is difficult to keep. A funny picture stays. The more unusual, colourful and emotional the picture, the stronger the memory.
Here are some ways to use mnemonics for English. First, the picture method: for the word "bear", imagine a bear sitting on your chair and drinking tea. Second, the sound method: link the English sound to an Arabic word that sounds similar, and create a small story with both. Third, the story method: connect five new words into one short, crazy story. Fourth, the memory palace: place words in the rooms of your home. Put "table" in the kitchen, "bed" in the bedroom and "door" at the entrance, and then walk through the house in your mind.
Mnemonics are not magic, and you do not need them for every word. Use them for the difficult words that you keep forgetting. Combine them with review after one day and after one week, and you will remember them for a long time.
Be creative and have fun. If a picture makes you laugh, it is probably a good one.
Link new words to funny, vivid pictures or places you know, and review them later.
