Do you start to study, check your phone for a minute, and find that an hour has passed? Many people have this problem. In the late 1980s, an Italian university student named Francesco Cirillo had it too. He took a kitchen timer shaped like a tomato, set it for twenty-five minutes, and promised himself to work without interruption until it rang. He called the method Pomodoro, which is the Italian word for tomato.

The method is very simple. First, choose one task, for example "learn ten new words" or "listen to one dialogue three times". Second, put your phone away or turn on the silent mode. Third, set a timer for twenty-five minutes and work only on that task. Fourth, when the timer rings, stop and take a break of five minutes. Stand up, drink water, look through the window. After four rounds, take a longer break of fifteen to thirty minutes.

Why does it work? A short, clear goal feels easy to start, and starting is usually the hardest part of studying. The timer creates a small deadline, so your brain focuses. The breaks give your mind time to rest, and the rest helps you remember. Finally, every finished round gives you a small feeling of success, and these small successes build motivation.

There are some useful rules. If someone interrupts you, write the interruption on a piece of paper and return to the task. If you finish early, use the extra time to review. If a round is not completed, do not count it. You can also change the numbers: beginners sometimes start with fifteen minutes of work and five minutes of rest.

Try three Pomodoros today. Seventy-five minutes of real focus is worth more than a whole afternoon of half attention.
