Many learners say, "First I will study grammar and words for a year, and then I will speak." It sounds logical, but it is a trap. People who wait for a perfect moment often wait forever. Language teachers and experienced learners, such as the writer Benny Lewis, give a different advice: speak from the first day, even with only a few words.
Why is speaking so important? Because speaking is a skill, like swimming or driving a car. You cannot learn to swim only by reading a book about swimming. You must enter the water. In the same way, your mouth, your ears and your brain need practice to work together. At first the sounds feel strange, and your sentences come slowly. This is normal. After many repetitions, the movements become easy.
Speaking also shows you what you do not know. When you try to say "I want to buy a ticket", you may find that you do not know the word "ticket". That small problem is a gift, because now you have a real reason to learn the word, and you will remember it better.
You do not need another person to begin. You can speak alone. Read a sentence aloud and repeat it three times. Describe what you are doing: "I am drinking tea. I am sitting in the kitchen." Talk to your reflection in the mirror. Record yourself for thirty seconds, then listen and try again. When you are ready, find a friend, a teacher or a language partner online.
Do not worry about accent or mistakes. Most people are happy when a learner tries, and they usually understand you. Your accent will improve naturally when you listen a lot.
A simple rule is this: after every lesson, say five sentences aloud. It takes two minutes, and in one month you will have spoken English more than one hundred and fifty times.
Do not wait to be ready. Speak from day one, even alone, even with a few words.
