"I am too old to learn English." Many adults say this sentence. Perhaps you have said it too. Is it true? The honest answer is: no. But the full answer is more interesting, because age does change how we learn a language.

Researchers talk about a critical period, a time in childhood when the brain learns sounds very easily. Children who start a new language early often develop a natural accent and a good feeling for the sounds. This is a real advantage. But it is only one part of language learning. Language is also words, grammar, reading, listening and the ability to speak in real situations. In these areas, adults can learn very well, and sometimes faster than children.

Why? Adults can read and write already, and they understand how grammar works in their first language. They can plan their study, set goals and use smart methods. They know what they need English for, for example for work, travel or study, so they stay motivated. Children have more free time and fewer fears, but adults have better learning strategies.

There are many adults who start a language at forty or fifty and reach a high level. They do not become perfect copies of native speakers, but they communicate clearly, understand films and books, and work in the language every day. That is a very successful result.

The real problem is not age. The real problem is stopping. Many learners study hard for two weeks, feel tired, and quit. The people who succeed are not always the most talented. They are the people who continue, even with small steps, even on busy days.

So, do not ask, "Am I too old?" Ask a better question: "What can I practise today, even for ten minutes?" That question moves you forward at any age.
