Most students study in the same way: they read their notes again and again. It feels comfortable, and it feels like learning. But research in psychology shows something surprising. Trying to remember information is a much better way to learn than reading it one more time. Scientists call this the testing effect, or retrieval practice.
Why does it work? When you read a page for the third time, the words look familiar. You say, "Yes, I know this." But recognising a word is not the same as remembering it. When you close the book and try to say the word from your memory, your brain has to search for it. That search is difficult, and the difficulty makes the memory stronger.
Many experiments have compared two groups of students. One group read a text several times. The other group read it once and then tried to write down what they remembered. A few days later, the second group usually remembered more. The students who only re-read often felt more confident, but they remembered less.
For a language learner, this idea is very practical. After a lesson, close your book. Say the new words out loud. Write five sentences without looking. Then open the book and check. If you made mistakes, that is useful, because now you know what to study. A wrong answer is not a failure. It is a map that shows you where to go next.
You can also test yourself with flashcards, short quizzes and speaking exercises. Try to answer before you look at the answer. Even waiting for three seconds before you turn a flashcard makes your brain work.
A good habit is to finish every study session with a short test. It takes only a few minutes, and it turns studying into a real practice for real life.
Close the book and try to remember. Mistakes show you what to study next.
